A First-Timer’s Guide to Camping in Cornwall with Children

Camping is one of the best ways to get your children away from screens this summer, but it can be daunting if you’re not done it before. One thing that looks likely to be on your side this summer is the weather. We’re already experiencing an incredible heatwave this May. However, in the UK it’s obviously important to be prepared for anything!

The good news is that camping in Cornwall can be a brilliant family holiday when you choose the right base.

At Tregarton Park, we regularly welcome families who are new to camping, as well as those who come back year after year. Our family-run park near St Austell gives you space to relax, easy access to beaches and attractions, and practical facilities that make camping with children much simpler.

Making family life easier when camping

When you are camping with children for the first time, the little things matter. A good family-friendly campsite should feel safe, well cared for and easy to settle into.

At Tregarton Park, all our pitches are divided by hedging or shrubs, giving each family their own individual, secluded space. This is especially useful when you have children who need room to play, eat, read, nap or simply wind down after a busy day exploring Cornwall.

Every pitch also has a 10amp electricity supply, which can make a huge difference on a first family camping trip. You can charge phones, use a small camping fridge, power essential devices and keep things running more smoothly.

Picking the right pitch for your family

We appreciate that not every family camps in the same way. Some families prefer a classic grass pitch, while others want the convenience of a hardstanding pitch for a touring caravan or awning.

At Tregarton Park, we offer grass pitches with electric, water connections and more. We also offer awning-friendly gravel hardstanding pitches, again with different choices of connection. Families can choose from Standard, Premium, XL and Jumbo XL pitch sizes during the booking process, so you can pick the space that suits your tent, caravan, awning and family setup.

For first-time campers, it is worth thinking carefully about how much space you need. A larger pitch can make life easier if you are bringing bikes, beach gear, your dog (did we mention we’re pet-friendly?) or extra equipment.

Keep children entertained with our heated pool

One of the biggest worries for parents is keeping children busy. Cornwall has plenty to offer, but it also helps when your campsite has things to do without needing to get in the car.

At Tregarton Park, families can enjoy our heated swimming pool, playground and tennis courts. These simple on-site activities are ideal for slower mornings, relaxed afternoons or those moments when children still have energy after a day at the beach.

We also have a park shop, which is handy for everyday essentials, and free camp Wi-Fi, so you can check opening times, plan days out or keep in touch while you are away.

Make the most of Cornwall’s beaches and attractions

Our location is one of the reasons families choose us. Tregarton Park is close to beautiful beaches, countryside walks and popular family attractions. The Eden Project is within easy reach, and there are plenty of other days out nearby, including coastal villages, gardens and family-friendly places to explore.

This makes it easier to plan a varied holiday. One day might be a beach day, the next could be a trip to the Eden Project, followed by a quieter afternoon back at the park. Having a peaceful countryside base with coastal views means you can enjoy busy family adventures, then return somewhere calm at the end of the day.

Bring your furry friend along

For many families, the dog is part of the holiday. At Tregarton Park, we are pet-friendly and allow up to two dogs per pitch. That means you do not have to leave your four-legged family members behind.

Camping with children and dogs does take a little planning. Bring familiar bedding, leads, food bowls, towels and anything that helps your dog settle. It is also worth checking which local beaches and attractions allow dogs before you set off for the day.

Pack for comfort, not perfection

For a first camping trip with children, do not worry about making everything perfect. Focus on keeping everyone comfortable. Bring warm layers, waterproofs, easy meals, torches, spare clothes, beach towels, games and a few familiar bedtime items.

Cornish weather can change quickly, so it helps to be prepared for sunshine, showers and cooler evenings. With the right kit and a campsite that supports family camping, children often enjoy the adventure more than parents expect.
